Pleasure P Claims He Co-Wrote Lil Wayne’s Iconic Hit “Lollipop” and Demands Recognition
Pleasure P is on a mission for justice—both in recognition and compensation—for what he says is his contribution to the massive 2008 hit “Lollipop” by Lil Wayne.
The former Pretty Ricky member recently took to Instagram Live with a passionate declaration, claiming that he co-wrote the track alongside the late Static Major. With the song reportedly earning over $28 million throughout the years, Pleasure P insists it’s time he received his fair share. “I wrote that. I co-wrote ‘Lollipop,’” he said as the song played in the background. “Rex Zamor, [Wayne’s longtime manager] Tez, Wayne, Mack Maine: I need my damn plaque for this song, man. [Producer] Jim Jonsin, y’all can do something about this. But nobody cares about me anymore.”
The Origins of the Dispute
According to Pleasure P, his former manager Rex Zamor played a pivotal role in securing publishing rights, leaving him without proper credit. “Rex helped me with publishing, and he got his name on this record. And I can’t get what’s fair. Before my first album even came out, I wrote this song with Static,” Pleasure P revealed.
P also emphasized his urgency to resolve the matter, citing personal struggles. “My son just got out of jail. I don’t have time for this anymore. Give me what I deserve. I wrote this.”
The singer also took aim at Zamor, now affiliated with CMG and managing GloRilla, accusing him of seeking the spotlight rather than addressing past injustices. “That old manager of mine, he’s behind GloRilla on the red carpet because he wants to be seen,” P vented.
A Story He’s Stuck To
This isn’t the first time Pleasure P has claimed songwriting credit for “Lollipop.” In 2023, he shared a similar story on The Baller Alert Show. “There are certain elements of the song that I wrote that are still in there,” he said. “But Wayne obviously did what he needed to do.”
Producer Jim Jonsin also referenced Pleasure P in an earlier interview, although he didn’t explicitly credit him as a co-writer. Speaking to HipHopDX in 2008, Jonsin explained how “Lollipop” came to fruition: “Originally, I made this song for Danity Kane. [I] later played it for Pleasure P, formerly of Pretty Ricky, when he was working with Static Major. Static immediately got involved and heard it as a song for Pleasure P featuring Lil Wayne. Pleasure thought it should go directly to Lil Wayne. Static then met with Wayne to discuss some other work and played him ‘Lollipop.’ He loved it.”
Wayne and Kendrick Lamar: Clearing the Air
Meanwhile, Lil Wayne recently addressed a separate high-profile moment involving Kendrick Lamar. Earlier this year, Kendrick was announced as the headliner for the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show, an event set to take place in Wayne’s hometown of New Orleans on February 9.
Wayne initially expressed frustration over being overlooked for the coveted slot, leading to speculation of tension between the two artists. Fans pointed to a potential jab at Lamar in Wayne’s new album, GNX. However, the Young Money legend confirmed there’s no bad blood between them.
“I talked to him and wished him all the best. Told him to kill it. He’s gotta kill it,” Wayne shared during an interview with Skip Bayless.
The Fight for Recognition
For Pleasure P, the fight for proper credit on “Lollipop” remains deeply personal. Beyond the accolades and financial compensation, it’s about setting the record straight on his contribution to one of the most iconic tracks of the 2000s.
Whether this dispute will lead to official recognition remains uncertain. However, Pleasure P’s determination to secure his place in music history is undeniable. After all, “Lollipop” isn’t just a hit—it’s a cultural milestone and Pleasure P insists he deserves his slice of the pie.
