Tyler Perry Slams “Greedy” Insurance Companies for Abandoning Thousands of Clients Amid LA Wildfires
The actor calls out insurance companies for neglecting homeowners in the wake of a devastating fire season.
Tyler Perry, the 55-year-old star of the Madea films, has strongly criticized insurance companies for abandoning thousands of homeowners ahead of the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles. Perry expressed his heartbreak upon learning that many homeowners, including a nurse from Hastings Ranch, were left without coverage when their fire insurance was abruptly canceled—despite having paid premiums for over 75 years. This took place just days before the destructive Eaton fire wreaked havoc on the region.
The Outrage Over Canceled Policies
In a passionate statement shared on social media, Perry vented his frustration with the greed of insurance corporations, asking, “Can anyone else see the horror in how these companies can take billions of dollars from the community over the years and then suddenly be allowed to cancel millions of policies of those they profited off?” He continued, “People who have paid premiums their whole lives are left with nothing because of this insatiable greed.”
This criticism comes after State Farm canceled 72,000 homeowner policies in California last year, including 1,600 in Pacific Palisades and 2,000 in neighborhoods like Brentwood, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, and Monte Nido. Perry’s post highlighted the injustice faced by these homeowners and reflected his deep concern for those affected. “I’m praying for everyone as I figure out what steps to take to help as many as I can,” he wrote.
State Farm and Other Insurers Under Fire
In response to the wildfires, State Farm tweeted last Thursday: “Our number one priority right now is the safety of our customers, agents, and staff impacted by the fires, and supporting them during this tragic time.” Similarly, Farmers Insurance, Chubb Insurance, Allstate, Tokio Marine America Insurance Co., and Trans Pacific Insurance Co. have faced backlash for abandoning clients in California.
The Devastation of the Wildfires
As wildfires continue to ravage the state, firefighters are battling four separate blazes, consuming a total of 38,276 acres. The Pacific Palisades fire is currently 11% contained, while the Altadena fire is 15% contained. Tragic reports confirm that at least 16 people have died, and more than 105,000 residents are under evacuation orders. Economic losses are estimated between $135-150 billion.
Several celebrities, including Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, Anna Faris, Cary Elwes, Diane Warren, Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman, and Matt Damon, have lost their homes in the fires, highlighting the widespread devastation.
Tyler Perry’s Philanthropy Shines Amid Crisis
Perry is well-known for his philanthropy, having donated $400,000 to help Cocoa Brown, a former actress from For Better or Worse, purchase a new home last year. Additionally, Perry, who owns properties in Fayetteville, Georgia, was personally impacted when his estate was affected by the fires.
In 2023, Perry, born Emmitt Perry Jr., bought a new home for Josephine Wright, a beloved community member, after her family’s historical property was seized in a land dispute. That same year, the media mogul also committed to donating $2.75 million to help 100 low-income seniors in Atlanta cover the rising property taxes on their homes, ensuring they could stay in their homes until 2043.
Perry’s Latest Projects and Ongoing Work
While continuing his charitable work, Perry is busy on set for his upcoming Netflix film Madea’s Destination Wedding, which marks the 13th installment in the Madea series. The legendary producer also has a major new World War II drama titled The Six Triple Eight, which has already earned five NAACP Image Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Motion Picture. The film, which is based on the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, features an all-Black, all-female group of soldiers who sorted over 17 million pieces of mail under perilous conditions.
The Six Triple Eight has a star-studded cast, including Kerry Washington, Sam Waterston, Susan Sarandon, Oprah Winfrey, Gregg Sulkin, and Dean Norris. Despite receiving mixed reviews, with a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film remains an important representation of Black women’s history in the military.
On the personal front, Perry, a recipient of the honorary Oscar and Emmy Award, continues to be an advocate for the underserved, with his son Aman, aged 10, frequently appearing in social media posts alongside his mother, Ethiopian model Gelila Bekele. Perry’s work on and off the screen continues to reflect his commitment to making a positive impact in both the entertainment industry and the lives of those in need.
