Former Bodyguard Reveals He Fell in Love with Whitney Houston, Keeps a Precious Memento After 35 Years

Whitney Houston is widely regarded as one of the greatest voices of all time, and the world remembers her not only for her stunning vocal abilities but also for the incredible impact she had on the music industry. However, for David Roberts, the former bodyguard who protected her during the height of her career, the memories are far more personal and intimate.

In an exclusive interview published on December 27, David Roberts opened up about his time as Whitney Houston’s bodyguard and shared details from his forthcoming memoir, “Protecting Whitney”, set to release in January 2025. Roberts, who worked as Houston’s bodyguard from 1988 to 1995, revealed that he and the legendary diva shared experiences that mirrored much of what was depicted in the iconic 1992 film The Bodyguard, which was partly inspired by his real-life work with Houston.

A Dangerous Line to Cross

Throughout Whitney’s career, David Roberts says his main priority was always her safety, but there was one particular moment that tested his professional boundaries. Roberts recalled a time when the pop star rested her head on his shoulder during a moment of vulnerability. “In that moment, I wanted to give up everything and change the nature of our relationship,” Roberts admitted. However, he understood the risks of crossing that line: “If you cross that line, you lose your objectivity, and that can endanger the person you’re meant to protect.”

He reflected on the dynamic between Kevin Costner’s character, Frank Farmer, and Whitney Houston’s character, Rachel Marron, in The Bodyguard. “That’s why Frank and Rachel couldn’t be together—they crossed the line, and that was the end of it for him as her protector,” he explained.

Real-Life Inspirations Behind The Film

David Roberts went on to reveal that much of what was shown in the film The Bodyguard was based on his own experiences with Whitney. “Most of what happened in the movie, Whitney and I actually went through. The small details like Rachel clinging to Frank’s back to escape the crowd—we did that too,” he shared.

A Precious Keepsake from Whitney

One of the most touching parts of David Roberts‘ interview was his revelation that he still holds onto a sentimental memento from Whitney Houston. He spoke about a note that Whitney had written to him over 35 years ago. “It was written on a sticky note, and she slipped it under my door at the Regency Hotel in Hong Kong in 1988. I still have it—it’s faded over time, but it’s still incredibly precious to me,” Roberts explained.

This note is a powerful reminder of the deep connection the two shared during their time together, despite the professional nature of their relationship.

Initial Hesitations and Changing Perceptions

Interestingly, David Roberts initially didn’t want the job of being Whitney Houston’s bodyguard. He believed that being in the industry would make her a high-maintenance celebrity to protect. However, after meeting her, his perceptions were completely shattered. “I was truly impressed by her. All the stereotypes I had about the industry were completely broken down by this young, refined woman,” he recalled, adding that Whitney was not just talented but also funny and warm-hearted.

A Lasting Anger Over Whitney’s Death

David Roberts also spoke candidly about his feelings regarding Whitney Houston’s tragic death in 2012. His anger over her passing is still evident. “So many people could have done more to prevent it. They didn’t. They shirked responsibility in favor of greed,” he said, hinting at the industry’s failure to protect her.

It’s no secret that Whitney struggled with substance abuse for much of her adult life, going through multiple rehab stints. A close family friend shared in 2016 that Houston turned to drugs as a coping mechanism for the immense pressure of fame. “I think not being able to fully be herself was a huge burden she had to carry,” the friend said. “A person can look strong on the outside, but inside, she was battling insecurities, family issues, and emotional struggles.”

A Legacy of Love and Loss

Despite her struggles, Whitney Houston’s legacy remains powerful, and David Roberts‘ memories provide a rare glimpse into the life of a woman who was both a global icon and a human being with flaws. His story is not only a tribute to the artist but also a reminder of the complexities of fame and the personal challenges that accompany it.

Through his memoir and his interviews, David Roberts continues to honor the late star and preserve the memories of a remarkable woman who forever changed the music world.
