Disney Fans Unite: Sabrina Carpenter Is Their Rapunzel

It seems the internet has spoken, and Disney fans have a clear vision for the upcoming live-action remake of Tangled. Social media is buzzing with demands for Sabrina Carpenter to take on the lead role of Rapunzel in the highly anticipated film. The buzz surrounding this potential casting is undeniable.

Live-Action Tangled is Coming

On Wednesday, Variety broke the news that Disney is moving forward with a live-action adaptation of their 2010 animated hit, Tangled. The project is gaining momentum with Michael Gracey – known for directing The Greatest Showman – in talks to direct, with a script penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Fans are already getting excited at the prospect of seeing this beloved story brought to life with real actors.

The Original Animated Cast

For the 2010 animated film, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi lent their voices to the characters of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively. Their performances were a key part of the film’s massive success, and it’s clear that the duo hold a special place in the hearts of many Disney fans. Tangled was a huge box office success, becoming a favorite amongst Disney fans both young and old.

Social Media’s Top Pick

Shortly after the announcement, social media platforms, particularly X, erupted with fan opinions. Many expressed their excitement about the live-action remake, but the most prominent discussion revolved around who should play Rapunzel. Overwhelmingly, fans have rallied behind the idea of Sabrina Carpenter, 25, taking on the role.

The calls for Carpenter to play Rapunzel intensified, with many referencing her recent split from Barry Keoghan as a potential reason for her being available. Some also point to the singer’s decision to dress up in a Tangled-inspired outfit for Halloween last year. It seems the fans have already cast the perfect Rapunzel in their minds.

Fan Tweets and Comparisons

One fan wrote, “CAST TAYLOR LAUTNER AS FLYNN AND SABRINA CARPENTER AS RAPUNZEL.” Another fan shared side-by-side photos of Disney’s Rapunzel and Sabrina in her past Halloween costume, writing, “Disney, you have one job, DON’T mess it up PLEASE.”

“I guarantee Disney is going to cast Sabrina Carpenter in Tangled after the success Ariana Grande had with Universal. Plus Sabrina grew up on the Disney channel,” another fan shared, highlighting Sabrina’s strong connection to the Disney brand. Carpenter starred in Disney Channel shows like Girl Meets World and the film Adventures In Babysitting, making her a familiar face to Disney audiences.

Others chimed in, saying, “Sabrina Carpenter. She’s been working with Disney for years,” and “There’s only one answer. Sabrina Carpenter.” One fan pointed out that “Sabrina is genuinely perfect for this role especially since she can sing so well.” Another said, “In my mind, you only have two choices. Sabrina Carpenter or Florence Pugh,” showing the two distinct directions the studio could take the role.

Fans Weigh in on Flynn Rider

Fans also shared thoughts on who should play Flynn Rider, with one fan declaring, “SABRINA CARPENTER AND TAYLOR PEREZ FOR TANGLED LIKE THIS VISION IS SO CLEAR.” Taylor Zakhar Perez has starred in several projects, like The Kissing Booth series and Red, White & Royal Blue, making him a popular choice for Flynn Rider.

Tangled’s Original Success

Tangled was initially released in theaters in 2010 and grossed a massive $592.5 million at the box office against a $260 million budget. The film also featured the vocal talents of Donna Murphy alongside Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. It introduced several now-iconic songs like “I See the Light”, “I’ve Got A Dream,” and “When Will My Life Begin?”.

In 2017, a TV series titled Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure also premiered. However, a theatrical sequel to the 2010 film was never released. The excitement surrounding the remake suggests that the fanbase is as strong as ever.

Mandy Moore’s Endorsement

Mandy Moore herself has previously hinted that Carpenter would be a great fit for Rapunzel in a live-action adaptation. In an interview with Elite Daily, the This Is Us actress said of Sabrina: “I could picture her with 50 feet of hair or whatever. She seems like a real-life Disney princess.”

Moore even suggested a role for herself, telling the news outlet, “Maybe I could play Rapunzel’s mom.” She added, “Let’s have a real mother-daughter duet, and get someone to write an original song for us so we can talk about our differences and about how hard it is to be a young person in this world.”

Back in July, Zachary Levi shared his thoughts on who might play Flynn Rider when rumors of the live-action version of Tangled began to circulate. Levi told Entertainment Tonight, “I mean, he’s getting every other job but maybe Timothee Chalamet?”

He added, “Unfortunately, I feel a little old — and I don’t know all the young actors who could be that.”

A Critically Acclaimed Film

Tangled received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and garnered several award nominations, including two Golden Globe Awards. The film also received a nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Original Song for “I See The Light”.

Two years after Tangled, a short film titled Tangled Ever After was released, as well as a television movie called Tangled: Before Ever After (2017). While neither he nor Moore are expected to reprise their roles in the live-action film, Levi suggested that the pair could make a cameo appearance.

“I think it would be fun for Mandy and I to be Rapunzel’s parents. I think that would be a really fun little cameo for us to do,” Levi told the news outlet.

Speaking about the love the film receives even years after its release, Zachary stated, “I’m very proud of that movie. I’m so grateful to have been a part of it.”

He added, “It was always a dream to be in an animated Disney musical, and then I got to be in one! And not just any, I think one of the best ones that is out there.”

It’s clear that Disney fans are passionate about Tangled and equally passionate about seeing Sabrina Carpenter take on the role of Rapunzel. Whether Disney will take note of the fan-led campaign remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: the excitement for the live-action Tangled is real and the studio now has a decision to make!
