De La Hoya Targets Teofimo Lopez as Ryan Garcia’s Comeback Opponent, Not Devin Haney

Ryan Garcia’s Return and New Challenges

Oscar De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, recently confirmed that Ryan Garcia will not target a rematch with Devin Haney when he returns to the ring in April 2025. Although Garcia had an impressive victory over Haney in their April fight this year—dropping Haney three times before winning by majority decision—the result was later nullified after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine, resulting in a one-year suspension. Both fighters have expressed interest in a rematch, but De La Hoya emphasized that it is not in Garcia’s immediate plans.

According to De La Hoya, demands from Haney’s camp, particularly from Devin’s father, Bill Haney, who called for Garcia to undergo immediate VADA testing, have complicated the likelihood of a rematch. Instead, De La Hoya considers Teofimo Lopez, the WBO junior welterweight champion, a more suitable option. With titles in two weight divisions and an impressive track record, Lopez is poised to be a formidable opponent for Garcia’s comeback.

De La Hoya also expressed that a fight between Garcia and Lopez offers not only a high level of competition but also significant commercial appeal for both fighters. Lopez, who previously suffered a loss to George Kambosos Jr. and relinquished his unified lightweight titles, is currently seeking high-profile matchups, possibly in higher weight classes. However, a fight with Terence Crawford is unlikely, making a bout with Garcia a feasible option. De La Hoya is committed to making Garcia’s comeback a major event, with Lopez as the top target to test Garcia’s skills.

We’re not talking about anyone else but Teofimo. Ryan is in top shape, training hard, and ready for his return in April. We have plans no one could anticipate to mark his comeback. Ryan wants to face the best, and this fight will bring a worthy challenge for both. I’m confident that with this fight, Ryan will come back stronger than ever,” De La Hoya affirmed.
