Angelina Jolie’s Confession

Angelina Jolie admitted to lying about her singing ability to land the role of Maria, despite insecurities and her drive to conquer the arts.

Angelina Jolie’s Confession

Recently, Angelina Jolie surprised everyone by confessing she had “lied” about being able to sing in order to secure the part of Maria Callas in her upcoming biographical film. Although she had no prior singing experience, the Hollywood star boldly assured director Pablo Larrain that she could carry a tune—simply to guarantee the role.

After the film received a Golden Globe nomination, many believe Jolie is taking a step closer to the grand stage of the Academy Awards in March 2025. Her portrayal might just be the “ticket” to an Oscar nomination, though much depends on how things unfold in the coming months.

Jolie Admits She “Lied” to Land the Lead in Maria

In an interview at the Palm Springs Film Festival with Variety, Jolie revealed she once received a hurtful remark about her singing skills, which made her withdraw for a long time. However, she overcame that insecurity to play opera diva Maria Callas, depicting the legend’s final days under the guidance of director Pablo Larrain.

“I’ve never sung,” Jolie admitted. “Someone once told me I couldn’t sing, even sneered when I tried. It really got to me. I never told anyone, but it made me close that door in my life.”

She recalled how Pablo asked if she could sing when offering her the role. “I lied,” the actress confessed. “It’s like when someone asks, ‘Can you ride a horse?’ and you say, ‘Yes!’ even if you can’t. Obviously no one can sing like Maria. Absolutely no one. But I’ll do my best.”
