Opens Up About Doechii ‘s Feeling More ‘Understood’ by Queer Community Than Hip Hop

Doechii, a rising star in Hip Hop and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, recently shared her deep connection to queer culture and how it contrasts with her experiences in the Hip Hop industry. In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Wednesday (June 12), the “What It Is” artist revealed how embraced and supported she feels within queer spaces.

Finding Safety in Queer Culture

“No community has uplifted me and made me feel as safe as the gay community,” Doechii explained. “Ballroom culture, of course, is a part of that community. I just feel understood in that space, and not all the time in this hip-hop genre do I feel fully embraced, like I do in this bag. I just feel safe.”

Her comments highlight the challenges she has faced navigating the Hip Hop world as a queer artist while finding solace in the vibrant and inclusive LGBTQIA+ community.

Championing LGBTQIA+ Voices During Pride Month

As part of Pride Month celebrations, Doechii, along with JT of City Girls, penned heartfelt “love letters” to the LGBTQIA+ community in collaboration with Billboard.

“I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the LGBTQ+ community for embracing me so tightly and pushing not only my music, but also championing my personal growth,” Doechii wrote.

She continued, “My creative work is heavily influenced by both my Florida roots and the vibrant LGBTQ+ community. My music is dedicated to all those who have encouraged me to strive for excellence and even to those who may have doubted me along the way.”

JT, meanwhile, wrote about resilience and self-love, urging people to find “safe spaces to celebrate and love yourself” despite challenges from family, friends, and lawmakers.

Breaking Genre Barriers With ‘Alter Ego’

Doechii also spoke about her collaboration with JT on their track “Alter Ego” and how it represents a new chapter in her artistry.

“I accidentally created my own genre with this one,” Doechii said, describing the track as a blend of Hip Hop and house music that she calls “editorial rap.”

She added, “This record doesn’t sound like anything out right now. I’m so excited for y’all to experience this song, this visual, and this ERA with me!”

Advocacy Through Music

With her unique sound, unapologetic artistry, and unwavering advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights, Doechii continues to challenge conventions in Hip Hop. As she blends queer influences with her Florida roots, she’s carving out a space that feels authentic to her — while inspiring others to do the same.

Her contributions to the industry underscore the importance of inclusivity, creativity, and self-expression in shaping the future of music. Regarding the collab with JT, Doechii previously shared, “I accidentally created my own genre with this one.. this record doesn’t sound like anything out right now. I’m so excited for y’all to experience this song, this visual, and this ERA with me! when they ask you.. tell em it’s editorial rap; if hip hop and house music had a baby.”
