Unveils from Doechii Her Favorite Florida Slang and Talks Breaking Barriers at TDE

Hailing from Tampa, Florida, Doechii isn’t shy about repping her roots — including the unique slang that shaped her. In a recent Billboard interview, the rising star shared some of her favorite expressions, giving fans a glimpse into her hometown culture and how it influences her artistry.

Florida Slang: A Language All Its Own

Among her favorite phrases, Doechii highlighted “Gitt” and the more niche “Decka Like a Stecka.”

“[Gitt] is just referring to a child or a friend, you’ll just be like, ‘What’s up Gitt?’” she explained.
“Ok, this is a Tampa thing. We used to say ‘Decka Like a Stecka.’ That means like, I’m really about that life, I’m that bitch, I’m that girl. Decka Like a Stecka, period!”

For Doechii, these colloquialisms represent more than just catchy words; they’re a connection to her upbringing and identity as a proud Floridian.

Making History at Top Dawg Entertainment

As the first female rapper signed to TDE, Doechii embraces the responsibility of paving the way for other women in Hip Hop. Elsewhere in the interview, she spoke about what it’s like to be the first female rapper signed to Top Dawg Entertainment.

“That feels amazing,” she said. “It’s a huge responsibility because I know that after me, there’s gonna be more female rappers that are a part of TDE. So I just wanna make sure that I do everything so that the next girl feels comfortable doing everything.”

Since signing with the powerhouse label, she’s made waves with her bold and unapologetic artistry, notably with her EP she/her/black bitch, which dropped in August 2022.

Reclaiming Power Through Music

Doechii’s she/her/black bitch EP carries a powerful message about reclaiming labels that are often weaponized against Black women.

“Many times I’ve been referred to as a ‘bitch’ as a way to gaslight me out of certain spaces,” Doechii explained. “So I decided to take ownership of the ‘Black bitch’ and title my EP she/her/black bitch to reclaim that motherfucking power.”

The EP, which features collaborations with SZA, Rico Nasty, and Jst Ray, is both a statement of self-empowerment and an anthem for anyone who has ever felt dismissed for embracing their authentic selves.
